How Students Can Humanise ChatGPT Writing (Step-by-Step Practical Guide)
December 15, 2025
There is a moment almost every dissertation student reaches, even the confident ones. It usually happens late at night. You reread the same paragraph again and again, but nothing improves. Supervisor comments sit open on your screen. They are not wrong, just overwhelming.
And then the thought appears quietly: “Maybe I am not cut out for this.”
If you are here because you feel like giving up on your dissertation, let me say this clearly first: This feeling is common, temporary, and solvable. Dissertations do not defeat students because they are impossible. They defeat students because they are long, mentally demanding, and often isolating.
Before looking for solutions, many students find reassurance in seeing how real dissertations are completed. Reviewing well-structured dissertation chapter examples often reminds students that clarity usually comes after confusion, not before it.

Why So Many Students Feel Like Giving Up on Their Dissertation
Feeling stuck does not mean you lack ability. In academic review work, this feeling almost always comes from pressure building in several areas at once.
1. Mental and Physical Burnout
Months, sometimes years, of sustained academic effort slowly drain motivation. At some point, working harder stops producing better results. That is burnout, not failure.
2. Losing Interest in the Topic
A topic that once felt exciting can begin to feel repetitive or disconnected from your original goals, especially after data collection, when progress feels slower.
3. Perfectionism That Stops Progress
Many students are not blocked because they cannot write. They are blocked because they expect every sentence to sound final. Drafts are not meant to be perfect; they are meant to move.
4. Limited or Delayed Supervisor Feedback
When feedback is unclear or slow, students start second-guessing every decision. That uncertainty drains confidence and momentum.
5. Pressure Outside the Research
Deadlines, funding limits, visa conditions, family expectations, and career timelines often create more stress than the dissertation itself. When these pressures combine, even strong students begin to think about quitting.
This is often the stage where dissertation proofreading and editing support helps, not by doing the work, but by reducing friction so progress can resume.
What Actually Helps You Keep Going (Practical Steps)
This is not motivational theory. These are strategies that repeatedly help students finish.
1. Shrink the Work Until It Feels Possible
Stop thinking in chapters. Think smaller;
- One subsection
- One table
- One figure
- One page
Progress creates motivation, not the other way around.
2. Replace Deadlines With Clear Milestones
Instead of saying, “Finish Chapter 3.”
Try;
- Finalise research questions
- Clean the dataset
- Draft analysis paragraphs
- Format references
Each completed milestone reduces anxiety and restores control.
3. Stop Working in Isolation
Dissertations feel heavier when carried alone. Support can come from;
- Supervisors
- Peer feedback groups
- Academic editors
- Structured dissertation support services
Many students use dissertation writing services not because they lack skill, but because a guided structure saves time, stress, and mental energy.
4. Use Tools That Reduce Mental Load
You do not earn extra marks for struggling manually.
Helpful tools include;
- Scrivener, for organising drafts
- Zotero or Mendeley, for reference management
- Grammarly, for clarity, not content
- Trello, for visual progress tracking
The goal is momentum, not perfection. Many graduate students also benefit from practical workflow advice shared on platforms like GradHacker, which focuses specifically on productivity, planning, and surviving long research projects.
5. Reconnect With Your Original Reason for Starting
When motivation drops, ask yourself;
- What does finishing unlock for me?
- What changes once this is submitted?
- Who benefits when I finish?
Write the answers down. Revisit them when doubt returns.
6. Acknowledge Progress, Even Small Wins
Fixing reviewer comments. Completing a table. Cleaning references. These count. Visible progress feels real, and real progress rebuilds confidence.
7. Protect Your Mental Health
This matters more than many students admit,
- Take breaks without guilt
- Move your body regularly
- Sleep properly
- Step away when concentration collapses
A tired mind produces poor work and unnecessary self-doubt.
Real Situations From Students Who Nearly Quit
These are not unusual cases. They are typical.
- PhD candidate: Faced multiple desk rejections. After clarifying methodology and tightening formatting, the paper was accepted following minor revisions.
- Master’s student: Struggled with an over-length chapter. After condensing arguments and improving flow, the work was later published in a Scopus-indexed journal.
- Students aiming for journal publication often align their manuscripts with formal publisher requirements, such as those outlined in Elsevier’s Author Guidelines.
- Early-career lecturer: Under pressure to publish quickly. With better journal targeting and clearer tables, acceptance came in just over seven weeks.
- International student: Faced language and structural challenges. After refining academic tone and coherence, the dissertation was accepted within two months.
“I thought I was failing. I was actually exhausted. Once I stopped trying to do everything alone, things finally moved forward.” Postgraduate Student, UK
Common Mistakes That Push Students Toward Quitting
Avoiding these can make an immediate difference.
- Chasing perfection instead of progress
- Ignoring supervisor feedback
- Skipping outlines and planning
- Choosing overly complex topics
- Working entirely alone
- Poor time management
- Neglecting mental health
Fixing even one often restores momentum.
