Dissertation Presentation: Format, Slides, Examples, and Viva Tips (2026 Guide)

Last Updated: 2026 | Academic Year: 2026 | Reviewed by: Senior UK Academic Editor (Dissertation and Viva Support)

A dissertation presentation is often the final hurdle after months or even years of research. While many students focus on writing their dissertation, the presentation requires a slightly different skill set: summarising complex ideas, explaining your decisions clearly, and responding confidently to examiner questions, all within a strict time limit.

Most students struggle not because their research is weak, but because they are unsure about slide structure, how much detail to include, or how to explain results without sounding rehearsed. This step-by-step guide will show you how to create a dissertation presentation that impresses examiners, using real examples and practical tips suitable for undergraduate, master’s, and PhD students.

What Is a Dissertation Presentation?

A dissertation presentation is a formal oral explanation of your research project delivered to examiners during a proposal defense, final defense, or viva voce. Its purpose is to demonstrate that you;

• Understand your research decisions
• Can explain findings clearly
• Can justify limitations and conclusions

In most viva, examiners focus on your reasoning rather than memorised answers. They want to see why you chose a methodology, how you interpreted results, and what your research contributes.

For an authoritative guide on presenting your research professionally, the University of Chicago outlines key strategies for dissertation defenses.

What Should Be Included in a Dissertation Presentation?

A strong presentation summarises your research rather than repeating your dissertation. Most presentations include;

• Title and research objectives
• Brief background and context
• Key literature themes (not full reviews)
• Research methodology and design
• Core findings only
• Discussion and implications
• Conclusion and recommendations

Reviewing dissertation chapter examples helps you condense long chapters into concise, examiner-friendly slides.
Tip: focus on what you would explain verbally rather than writing everything on the slide.

Dissertation Presentation Format (University-Approved)

While formats vary, most UK universities expect;

• 10–20 minute presentations
• Clear, readable fonts
• Minimal text and visual support
• Logical flow between sections

Following a dissertation formatting guide ensures your slides meet academic standards and avoid layout issues that can distract examiners.
Tip: consistent fonts and headings make your slides look professional instantly.

How Many Slides for a Dissertation Presentation?

Slide count depends on the level and type of defense:

• Undergraduate: 8–12 slides
• Master’s: 10–15 slides
• PhD: 15–20 slides

Remember, more slides do not improve marks. Examiners value clarity over volume. For visual summaries like posters, using poster writing services can help present data quickly and clearly.

Dissertation Presentation Slides (Slide-by-Slide Breakdown)

Each slide should serve a purpose.

• Title Slide: Dissertation title, student name, supervisor, institution
• Introduction Slide: Research background and problem
• Objectives Slide: Research aims and questions
• Methodology Slide: Design, data collection, and tools
• Results Slide: Only key findings
• Discussion Slide: Interpretation and relevance
• Conclusion Slide: Summary, implications, and recommendations

Students with quantitative results benefit from reviewing Chapter 4 data analysis guidance to present complex outputs clearly.
Tip: only include graphs and tables that support your argument.

Dissertation Presentation Script: What to Say on Each Slide

Slides guide your talk; they do not replace it. Reading verbatim is one of the most common mistakes.

Prepare talking points for each slide rather than a memorised script. Practicing with model answers and exam notes helps you sound confident, natural, and academic.

Dissertation Presentation Examples (Master’s and PhD)

Examples clarify expectations;

• Master’s: applied research, problem-solving
• PhD: originality, contribution to knowledge, critical evaluation

Reviewing dissertation presentation examples shows how to condense findings, defend arguments, and communicate conclusions under time pressure.

Viva Tips for Dissertation Presentations

• Explain decisions calmly
• Acknowledge limitations honestly
• Pause briefly before answering complex questions
• Avoiding over-rehearsed responses

Common Dissertation Presentation Mistakes

• Overcrowded slides
• Rushing through results
• Poor time management
• Ignoring limitations
