APA (American Psychological Association) referencing is the standard citation style at most Australian universities — used across psychology, education, business, nursing, social work, and many other disciplines. Getting it right is not optional: examiners check referencing carefully, and errors can cost you marks in your academic integrity assessment.
This guide covers APA 7th edition — the current version — from in-text citations and reference list formatting through to citing Australian government reports, ABS data, and thesis sources that many guides overlook.
Need a thesis written to APA 7th edition standard? Every piece of work from Premier Dissertations AU is formatted correctly from the first draft — in-text citations, reference lists, tables, and figures all included. From AUD $27/page.

APA referencing is an author-date citation system developed by the American Psychological Association. Rather than using footnotes (as in AGLC4 for law) or numbered references (as in IEEE for engineering), APA places brief citations directly in the body of the text — typically in the format (Author, Year) — and then lists all full source details in a reference list at the end of the document.
The system is designed to be both transparent and minimally disruptive to reading flow. A reader can immediately see who said something and when, without leaving the page.
APA 7th edition was published in 2019 and is now the required standard at virtually all Australian universities that use the APA system. If your faculty guide says "APA" without specifying an edition, assume 7th.
What Changed from APA 6th to 7th Edition
If you learned APA referencing before 2019, there are several important changes you need to know about:
| Element | APA 6th Edition | APA 7th Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Authors (3+) | First citation: all authors listed | Always use et al. from first citation |
| DOI format | doi:10.xxxx/xxxx | https://doi.org/10.xxxx/xxxx |
| Running head | Required on all pages | Only for manuscripts submitted for publication |
| Publisher location | Required for books | No longer required |
| Journal volume/issue | Issue number not italicised | Issue number in parentheses, not italicised |
| URLs | Retrieved from http://... | Just the URL — no "Retrieved from" |
In-Text Citations
APA uses two types of in-text citation. Choosing between them depends on how you integrate the source into your sentence.
Parenthetical citations
The author and year appear in parentheses at the end of the sentence, before the full stop. Use this when you are paraphrasing or summarising a source.
Example
Honours students at Go8 universities consistently demonstrate higher research output than their non-Go8 counterparts (Smith & Jones, 2023).
Narrative citations
The author appears as part of the sentence, with only the year in parentheses. Use this when the author is the subject of your sentence.
Example
Smith and Jones (2023) found that Honours students at Go8 universities consistently demonstrate higher research output than their non-Go8 counterparts.
Direct quotations
When quoting word-for-word, you must include the page number (or paragraph number for sources without pages).
Format
(Author, Year, p. X) — for a single page
(Author, Year, pp. X–Y) — for a page range
(Author, Year, para. X) — for sources without page numbers
Multiple authors — quick reference
| Number of Authors | Parenthetical | Narrative |
|---|---|---|
| 1 author | (Smith, 2023) | Smith (2023) |
| 2 authors | (Smith & Jones, 2023) | Smith and Jones (2023) |
| 3+ authors | Smith et al. (2023) | Smith et al. (2023) |
Reference List Rules
The APA reference list appears at the end of your thesis or assignment on a new page titled References (not "Bibliography" or "Works Cited"). Every source cited in the text must appear here — and every entry here must appear in the text.

Australian Government report or policy

APA vs AGLC4 vs IEEE — Which Style Does Your Faculty Use?
Not all Australian disciplines use APA. Using the wrong referencing style is a common and easily avoidable mistake. Here is a quick guide:
| Referencing Style | Disciplines | Format |
|---|---|---|
| APA 7th | Psychology, Education, Business, Nursing, Social Work, Health Sciences | Author-date, reference list |
| AGLC4 | Law | Footnotes, bibliography |
| IEEE | Engineering, IT, Computer Science | Numbered in-text, reference list |
| Vancouver | Medicine, Pharmacy, Biomedical Sciences | Numbered in-text, reference list |
| Chicago / Harvard | History, Humanities, some Arts disciplines | Footnotes or author-date |
When in doubt, check your subject outline, unit guide, or the graduate research school handbook for your specific faculty. If referencing style is not mentioned, ask your supervisor before you start writing.
