Common Formatting Errors in GCC Dissertations
September 23, 2026
The best SPSS alternatives for UK dissertation students are jamovi, JASP, R, and PSPP. jamovi and JASP both open .sav files directly and produce APA-formatted output, making them the closest free matches to SPSS for standard dissertation analyses. R is more powerful but requires coding. PSPP is a direct SPSS clone with limited graphing and procedure support. The right choice depends on whether your supervisor and department accept non-SPSS tools, which you should confirm before switching.
Updated: September 2026 · For Academic Year 2026-27
This guide compares each alternative on what actually matters for dissertation work: whether your supervisor will accept it, whether it opens your existing .sav files, and whether you can defend the analysis at viva. A tool being technically capable is not the same as being safe to use for a dissertation. The information below is based on published tool documentation, UK university library guidance, and our own experience supporting dissertation students.

Why Students Look for an SPSS Alternative
Two things send students looking for an alternative. The first is licence expiry. University SPSS licences are annual and keyed to enrolment, which means they lapse when your student status ends. That often happens before corrections are signed off, or between terms, sometimes mid-dissertation. The second is cost. SPSS student GradPacks are fixed-term rentals with no perpetual option, and buying directly after graduation moves you onto a commercial subscription rate.
If you are in that position now, the question is not just which tool is free. It is which tool your department will accept and whether you can defend the switch at viva.
Will Your University Accept It?
This is the question no tool comparison page answers, and it matters more than any feature list. A tool being technically capable is not the same as being safe to use for a dissertation.
Check your handbook and confirm with your supervisor first
Before you switch tools, check your dissertation handbook or rubric. If SPSS is named in the rubric as a required tool, switching is riskier than if the rubric says "a suitable statistical package." If in doubt, ask your supervisor directly before you commit. This is a non-negotiable step, not optional advice.
Avoid switching mid-dissertation if you can
If you have already run some analyses in SPSS, switching tools partway through creates a practical problem: some output in SPSS format, some in another tool's format. You may need to re-run or re-format output to keep your reporting consistent. If you must switch, document the change and check with your supervisor first.
Justify the tool choice in your methodology chapter
Frame your tool choice as a methodological decision, not a logistical one. A sentence like "The analysis was conducted in [tool], chosen for [reason], which is consistent with the approach used in [citation]" is usually enough. If you are using R, the reproducibility of commented scripts is a genuine methodological strength, not a weakness. Examiners may ask you to show exactly how a result was produced, and script-based tools allow this in a way that point-and-click output does not.
UK universities already use some of these tools
Several UK universities already recommend or support jamovi and JASP for dissertation work. Arden University provides access to jamovi, JASP, R, R Studio, and Stata through its AppsAnywhere virtual application platform. This does not mean every department accepts them, but it does mean these tools are not fringe choices. Both jamovi and JASP are used in UK university teaching, which means your supervisor is more likely to be familiar with them than with a niche alternative.
Tool-by-Tool Comparison
Each tool below is assessed on what it is best for, whether it is free or paid, its learning curve, whether it opens .sav files, and its genuine limitations. No tool is claimed to be 100% feature-equivalent to SPSS, and where a claim about a tool's capability cannot be confirmed, it is softened rather than stated as fact.
jamovi
jamovi is generally considered the closest free match to SPSS for most master's-level dissertation work. It offers a spreadsheet-style interface deliberately familiar to SPSS users, runs on R underneath, and produces APA-formatted output tables that can go into a manuscript with minimal reformatting.
Best for: Students who want SPSS-style menus with APA output and no coding.
Cost: Free and open source.
Learning curve: Low.
Opens .sav files: Yes, directly, with no conversion or export step.
APA output: Yes, auto-formatted.
Genuine limitations: Some very advanced or specialised procedures are not available. It is not a direct clone of SPSS, and output formatting differs slightly.
JASP
JASP is developed at the University of Amsterdam and offers a point-and-click interface that feels familiar to SPSS users. Its distinguishing feature is that it offers a Bayesian counterpart to almost every frequentist test in the same interface, at the same level of effort. It reads .sav files directly and produces APA-formatted tables.
Best for: Students whose supervisor requires or expects Bayesian analysis, or who want both classical and Bayesian results side by side.
Cost: Free and open source.
Learning curve: Low.
Opens .sav files: Yes, directly.
APA output: Yes, auto-formatted.
Genuine limitations: Fewer advanced procedures than SPSS or R. Some specialised analyses are not available. It is not a direct clone of SPSS.
R
R is the most flexible and reproducible option in this comparison. It is free and open source, runs on all major platforms, and is increasingly expected in top programmes and journal submissions. It reads .sav files via packages such as haven, and it can produce publication-quality graphics. The learning curve is real, but the payoff is a transparent, reproducible analysis process that examiners increasingly value.
Best for: Students who plan to publish, whose programme explicitly requires it, or whose methods require complex or custom models.
Cost: Free and open source.
Learning curve: High. Expect several weeks of active learning before you are proficient for dissertation-level work.
Opens .sav files: Yes, via packages such as haven.
APA output: Available via packages such as apaTables or papaja, but requires setup.
Genuine limitations: No point-and-click interface by default. Requires comfort with code or willingness to learn. Not the fastest route to a first result if you have never coded.
PSPP
PSPP is designed as a direct free replacement for SPSS. It uses the same .sav file format, understands SPSS syntax, and has a graphical interface that mirrors SPSS. It provides a comprehensive set of capabilities including frequencies, cross-tabs, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, linear and logistic regression, reliability analysis, non-parametric tests, factor analysis, cluster analysis, and chi-square analysis. However, it has documented limitations that matter for dissertation work.
Best for: Students who need a direct SPSS clone and whose analysis requirements are basic.
Cost: Free and open source.
Learning curve: Medium. The interface mirrors SPSS, but it is less polished than jamovi or JASP.
Opens .sav files: Yes. It can also export files in SPSS 'portable' and 'system' file formats.
APA output: No. Output is available in ASCII, PDF, PostScript, SVG or HTML formats, but it is not auto-formatted to APA style.
Genuine limitations: A limited range of statistical graphs can be produced. It can generate histograms, pie-charts, scree plots, and np-charts, but it does not produce box plots. The graphical interface is not as user friendly as jamovi or JASP. Statistical procedure support is limited, though growing.
Stata (Paid, for Context)
Stata is included here for context because it is often mentioned alongside SPSS as a paid alternative for students whose methods require panel data analysis or complex survey designs. It offers best-in-class panel estimators and a native survey design prefix. It is not a free alternative, and it is not a direct SPSS replacement for general dissertation work.
Best for: Economics, epidemiology, health services research, and applied social science where panel data or complex survey design is central.
Cost: Paid. Student perpetual licences are available. Rental options also exist.
Learning curve: Medium. A gentle GUI on-ramp that nudges toward do-file syntax.
Opens .sav files: Yes, via import.
APA output: No. Requires manual formatting or third-party tools.
Genuine limitations: Cost. Less common in psychology and education departments, where SPSS or jamovi are more typical.
How We Can Help
If you would rather not learn a new tool from scratch, Premier Dissertations' UK academic editors can run the statistical analysis for you directly, by hand, using whichever tool best fits your methodology, and typically turn around a properly conducted analysis within hours, not days. You will receive the source files (your dataset, the output file, and a written interpretation) so you can see exactly how each result was produced and defend it confidently at viva.
If you have already run your own analysis and just want a second opinion, we can review it regardless of which software produced it, checking that your reporting follows your department's expected conventions and that your results are presented clearly enough to defend at viva.
Not sure which route fits your situation, or on a tight deadline? WhatsApp us and a specialist will tell you honestly what is realistic for your timeline; nothing is charged until you have seen the completed or improved work and are ready to proceed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is R better than SPSS for a dissertation?
R is generally considered more flexible and reproducible, and it can produce publication-quality graphics. SPSS is generally considered faster to learn and is more common in some departments. Neither is universally better; the right choice depends on your supervisor's expectations and whether your methods require the flexibility R offers.
Will my supervisor accept analysis done in a different tool?
This varies by institution and supervisor, so you should check your handbook and confirm with your supervisor before switching. That said, JASP and jamovi produce APA-formatted output, and R scripts offer reproducibility that point-and-click output does not, so these are defensible choices when the tool choice is explained in the methodology chapter.
Can I switch tools partway through my dissertation?
It is possible, but riskier than choosing one tool at the start. If you have already run some analyses in SPSS and switch to another tool, you may need to re-run or re-format output to keep your reporting consistent. If you must switch, document the change and check with your supervisor first.
Which SPSS alternative is closest to SPSS itself?
PSPP is designed as a direct free replacement for SPSS and uses the same .sav file format, but it has documented limitations in graph generation and some statistical procedures. JASP and jamovi offer a more polished menu-driven experience and produce APA-formatted output, but they are not direct clones.
What is the closest free alternative to SPSS?
jamovi and JASP are generally considered the closest free alternatives to SPSS. Both offer SPSS-style menu-driven interfaces, open .sav files directly, and produce APA-formatted output. PSPP is designed as a direct clone of SPSS but has documented limitations in graphing and some statistical procedures.
