VCE Research in Victoria — An Overview
The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is awarded to students who successfully complete Year 11 and Year 12 study in Victoria. Research-based assessment appears in multiple VCE subjects — sometimes as a School-Assessed Coursework (SAC) task, sometimes as a standalone investigation unit, and sometimes as the entire basis of a subject.
The subjects where research is most prominent include:
| VCE Subject |
Research Component |
Format |
| Extended Investigation | Entire subject is independent research | Written report, poster, oral defence |
| Psychology | Practical investigation (Units 1–4) | Scientific report, SAC |
| Global Politics | Issues analysis, case study research | Extended written response, SAC |
| Health & Human Development | Health issue investigation | Report, SAC |
| Legal Studies | Case study and law reform analysis | Written response, SAC |
| Environmental Science | Field and secondary research | Scientific report, SAC |
| Business Management | Case study analysis | Written report, SAC |
| History, Media | Source analysis, investigation | Extended written response, folio |
The VCE Extended Investigation
The VCE Extended Investigation (EI) is a standalone subject in which students design and conduct a substantial piece of original research over the course of the year. It is one of the most demanding — and most rewarding — subjects in the VCE program.
The EI is assessed through four main components:
✓Logbook — an ongoing record of your research process, decisions, and reflections (Unit 1)
✓Research proposal — your question, methodology, and literature review (Unit 2)
✓Written report — your full research findings, typically 3,000–4,500 words (Unit 3–4)
✓Oral defence or poster presentation — presenting and defending your findings to a panel
VCAA guidance: The EI topic must be genuinely investigable — it must produce original findings rather than just summarising existing literature. Primary research (surveys, experiments, observation, interviews) is strongly encouraged and distinguishes the highest-scoring submissions.
How to Choose a Strong VCE Research Topic
The best VCE research topics share four qualities:
✓Researchable within your resources — you can collect data or access sufficient secondary evidence without specialist equipment or restricted access
✓Linked to your subject's key concepts — for EI especially, your topic should connect clearly to an established field of inquiry
✓Victorian or Australian in focus — grounding your research locally strengthens relevance and makes primary data collection more practical
✓Genuinely interesting to you — you will spend most of the year on this; pick something you actually want to investigate
VCE Psychology Research Topics
VCE Psychology Units 3 and 4 require students to conduct a practical investigation using the scientific method. Topics must be grounded in the biological, psychological, and social model of health, with a focus on brain function, mental health, memory, or learning.

VCE Extended Investigation — Suggested Topics
The EI is not tied to a single subject area — students can investigate almost any topic across STEM, humanities, social sciences, and the arts. The highest-scoring EI submissions tend to combine a clear research question, primary data collection, and a connection to a recognised body of literature. Here are cross-disciplinary topic ideas that work well for the EI format:
VCE stress & coping strategiesWhat coping strategies do VCE students at Melbourne metropolitan schools use to manage exam stress, and which are most effective at maintaining wellbeing?
Bicycle infrastructure & commutingDoes the quality of cycling infrastructure in inner Melbourne suburbs influence the likelihood of commuting by bicycle among adults aged 20–40?
Food labelling & consumer behaviourDoes the Health Star Rating system on packaged foods influence purchasing decisions among Victorian adults, and is it understood correctly?
Urban noise & wellbeingHow does exposure to traffic noise in high-density Melbourne suburbs affect the self-reported sleep quality and stress levels of residents?
School canteen nutritionHow nutritious are the menu offerings in Victorian government secondary school canteens, and do they meet the DHHS Healthy Choices guidelines?
Peer tutoring effectivenessDoes peer tutoring in VCE Mathematics improve academic outcomes for both the tutor and the tutee in Victorian co-educational secondary schools?
Tram punctuality & liveabilityHow does tram punctuality on Melbourne's busiest routes affect commuter satisfaction and mode-shift behaviour?
Volunteer participation & wellbeingIs there a measurable relationship between volunteering frequency and subjective wellbeing among adults in regional Victorian communities?
EI tip: VCAA assessors reward originality. If you can collect primary data — a survey, structured observations, a small experiment — your EI will stand out from submissions that rely entirely on secondary sources. Even a modest sample of 30–50 participants can provide meaningful original findings at this level.
