Dissertation Publication Cost: What You’ll Really Pay (2026-2027)

A student asked me last month what her dissertation publication would cost, and I had to ask her back what she actually meant. Dissertation cost gets used for three different things, your programme tuition, the small fee your university charges when you submit your finished thesis, and what it costs to turn that thesis into a published journal article. This page is about the last one, since that's the question I get asked most, and the one where a clear answer actually helps you plan.

One thing worth saying plainly. If you're actually asking what it costs to pay someone to write your dissertation for you, that's not something we do, and it's been a criminal offence in England since 2022 under the Skills and Post-16 Education Act. Journal Submission and Processing Fees

These vary a fair amount by tier and by field, but as a rough guide:

• Tier 1 journals: £150 to £400
• Tier 2 journals: £100 to £250
• Tier 3 or regional journals: £50 to £150, sometimes nothing at all

Open Access Charges (APCs)

This is usually the single biggest cost in the whole process. If you want your article freely available to anyone rather than sitting behind a subscription paywall, expect an Article Processing Charge somewhere between £300 and £2,000, occasionally more. Whether that's worth it depends on what you actually need from publication, and I've covered that trade-off properly in our open access vs subscription journals guide.

The Costs Students Usually Forget to Budget For

• Plagiarism and similarity checks, £10 to £50
• Translation, if you're publishing somewhere non-English, £100 to £500
• Redrawing figures or tables to meet a journal's resolution standards, £30 to £150 an item
• Copyright or licensing fees if you're using someone else's material, £50 to £200

None of these are huge on their own, but they add up, and they're the kind of thing that catches people out if they've only budgeted for the headline submission fee.

What One Student Actually Paid

One of our students submitted to MDPI, an open access publisher, and her total came to about £850 once the APC, a plagiarism report, and formatting were all in. She was accepted on her first submission. I want to be honest that acceptance isn't guaranteed for anyone, however well prepared the manuscript is, but proper preparation is the part you can actually control.

If Budget Is Genuinely Tight

• University repositories cost nothing and give you a permanent, citable record, even if the prestige isn't the same as a peer reviewed journal
• Regional or lower tier journals often charge minimal or no submission fee
• It's always worth asking your supervisor whether departmental funding can cover part of an APC, some can
